The tour

The Amon Klettersteig provides a connection between the Adamek- and Simonyhütte. A very rewarding, though high-alpine via ferrata that should not be underestimated, with approach/descent across the glacier. Aside from alpine experience and good physical condition, glacier equipment is also essential.

Turn-by-turn directions

Approach:

From the top station of the Dachstein cable car until shortly before the Seethalerhütte, past the Steinerscharte to the Simonyscharte. This is the beginning of the safty cables for the upper portion of the Amon Klettersteig (C).The complete Amon Klettersteig can be reached via the Steinerscharte to Gosau glacier (constant danger due to crevasses), dropping down to directly below the west face, where you will find the start of the actual climb (C/D).

Descent: Hike down the trail back to the Simonyscharte, from there back to the top station of the Dachstein cable car. Option to hike down via the Niederes Kreuz to Hallstatt glacier - alpine experience is essential.

Descent in northerly direction via the Niedere Kreuz and the Hoher Ochsenkogel to the Hoher Trog. From there eastwards to the Simonyhütte and over the Hallstätter Glacier back past the Seethalerhütte to the Hungerkogel mountain station. Duration around 4 hours.

Getting there

Arriving from the west:From the west you can take the Munich-Salzburg motorway, continuing on the Tauern motorway (A 10) until the Ennstal junction. From here take the Ennstal A-road (the B 320) for around 30 km into the Schladming-Dachstein region, then take the Ramsau am Dachstein turn-off.
