Ramsau am Dachstein

Johann Klettersteig

Tour description

The Johann Klettersteig is an especially interesting and diverse, though long and very difficult via ferrata. The beginning of the via ferrata is a key section, forcing many a climber to turn back, though the rest of the route is very manageable. This via ferrata requires very good physical condition! A 700 m steel cable and more than 250 pegs accompany you up this difficult rockface.

Comments:

The physical demands should not be underestimated, compounded by alevations over 2000 m above sea level. Especially in the middle section, there is a danger of rockslides! The via ferrata ends directly behind the Seethalerhütte on the Dachsteinwarte. This via ferrata is not suitable for childern or inexpirienced climbers.

Times:

  • Via Ferrata - 3:00 h
  • Time to Base - 2:00 h
  • Time from Top - 0:30 h
  • Total - 5:30 h

Map, elevation profile & further information

From the valley station of the Dachstein Glacier Cable Car, follow the well-marked hiking trail to the Dachstein South Face Hut. From there, descend briefly on the Pernerweg trail, branch off at the "Johann Klettersteig" sign, and continue on the well-marked trail to the first safety devices, which are often covered in snow. An alternative approach is the Anna Klettersteig.
From the Seethaler Hut, a trail leads over the Hallstatt Glacier to the top station of the Dachstein Glacier Cable Car. If you can't reach the final descent, you can descend via the Hunerscharten Steig (approx. 2 hours).
