Explore the new perspectives on the Dachstein

The Dachstein - an incomparable summit

The Dachstein – since time immemorial a favoured destination for alpinists – is not “only” a mountain, but at 2,995 metres a true stand-out peak in the Austrian Alps. In 1969 the Dachstein glacier became accessible to tourists thanks to the Dachstein Südwandbahn cable car. In 2024 a new era of supreme enjoyment will begin on the Dachstein with the reopening of the completely renovated and modernised mountain station.

A true crystal of energy

The completely refurbished Dachstein Südwandbahn mountain station at 2,700 metres above sea level focuses on sustainability and energy efficiency with a 125 KWp photovoltaic system. The photovoltaic glass panelling covers 1,000 m2 and ensures that 80 % of the energy required for the mountain station is generated in-house.

Brand new glavier restaurant

The centrepiece of the mountain station is the brand new glacier restaurant with breathtaking 280-degree views and a spacious outdoor terrace.  The new "Himmelsbar" on the roof offers a view of the imposing south faces of the Dachstein.

New attractions are awaiting you

In addition to the popular Sky Walk, the Suspension bridge and the Stairway to Nothingness, newly created panoramic viewing platforms around the mountain station invite you to enjoy pure freedom:

  • Dachstein Stairway to Heaven: 12 steps lead up to a glass platform, from where a breathtaking view of the Dachstein opens up.
  • The Half Dome Globe – an interactive globe in the valley station
  • Digital binoculars with a view of the Koppenkarstein
  • The Insta-friendly engagement spot for a perfect selfie with a view of the Dachstein
  • The Apptauen app – an interactive online tool to find out about the evolution of the Hallstätter glacier
  • The “Energy Crystal” art object close to the mountain station
  • The Dachstein Suspension Bridge, the Ice Palace and other attractions – to further enrich your Dachstein visit

Dachstein glacier

The Dachstein glacier, with a height of 2700 metres, towers majestically over Styria and is one of the most fascinating excursion destinations in Schladming. The impressive presence of the massive mountain alone is breathtaking, while the marvellous panorama across the Enns Valley to Slovenia and the Czech Republic leaves the viewer speechless.

A short ten-minute ride on the Dachstein panorama gondola is all it takes to immerse yourself in a completely new world. A breathtaking panorama stretches as far as the eye can see, accompanied by highlights such as the Dachstein Suspension Bridge with the Stairway to Nothingness, the Sky Walk and the Dachstein Ice Palace.

Sunrise Breakfast Dachstein

The sunrise trips, which take place in summer beginning in July, are your chance to experience the moment of the sunrise on the Dachstein glacier. The glacier restaurant team prepares an ample buffet breakfast, which provides plenty of energy to enjoy the Dachstein's great attractions including the suspension bridge, the stairway to nothingness, the Ice Palace and the Sky Walk.

Sunset on the Dachstein

Float up to the glacier during the day on the Dachstein panorama gondola, watch the sunset and then tuck into a hearty fondue with a salad buffet in the cosy atmosphere of the glacier restaurant with musical accompaniment to round off the day.

The sunset package is ideal for all epicures and romantics.

Hikes on and around the Dachstein

Dachstein Alpine area

The Ramsau high plateau stretches around 18 km long and 3 km wide on the southern slopes of the Hoher Dachstein.

In the alpine region at an altitude of up to 1,900 m you can either hike on comfortable
Hiking trails or steeper climbs up to the vertical rock faces of the Dachstein South Faces.

The parking lot at the valley station of the cable car is also a starting point for hikes on the alpine pastures.

Glacier hike

From the Hunerkogel mountain station over the glacier up to the summit of the Hoher Dachstein, you find yourself in high alpine terrain with all its fascination.

Due to its height and isolated location, special weather conditions prevail on the Dachstein massif. The weather can change completely within minutes, the extreme weather changes must be taken into account:

So plan every tour carefully and make sure you have the right clothing and equipment!

Climbing & via ferratas

There are 14 via ferratas and well-renovated climbing tours waiting for you on the Dachstein.

Due to its altitude of 2700 m and its isolated location, special weather conditions prevail on the Dachstein massif. The weather can change dramatically within a few minutes; these weather changes should not be underestimated.

If you go up the mountain, please plan each tour carefully and take the right clothing and the necessary equipment with you!

  • For exact times, information about difficulties and further questions, please contact tourism or mountain guide offices in good time!
  • Be aware of the danger of lightning on via ferratas!
  • Make sure you have the right equipment (crampons, ice ax, rope) when climbing the glaciers!
  • Alpine experience, proper protection on via ferratas and appropriate equipment are a prerequisite!

Cross-Country Skiing on the Dachstein glacier

The world's longest network of glacier cross-country trails stretches out against an incomparable mountain backdrop at an altitude of 2700 metres. From June to November the world's elite has the opportunity to enjoy ideal preparations for upcoming competitions  on 18 kilometres of diagonal and skating trails.

Here are the foundations for medals laid. The glacier trails are also appreciated by pleasure skiers. In particular in autumn as many as 500 athletes from over 25 nations go to the superbly groomed cross-country trails of the Schladming and Hallstatt glacier every day.

Paragliding on the Dachstein

Soar in the air for once... Paragliding comes very close to humanity's dream of flying and makes the heart of every freedom lover beat faster. Grab your personal, experienced guide from one of the regional flight schools and let yourself be impressed by the world of flying on a tandem flight.

A particularly impressive experience is a paragliding flight from the Dachstein (altitude difference of up to 2,000 m). On cloudless days, a breathtaking panorama awaits you with far-reaching views as far as the Triglav Mountains in Slovenia and as far north as the Czech Republic.
